Soccer:Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has been handed his first England senior call-up following the withdrawals of his team-mate Michael Carrick and Arsenal's Jack Wilshere from the squad to face Holland at Wembley on Wednesday.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had already claimed that Wilshere would not play due to an ankle injury that prevented the 19-year-old from playing any part in the Gunners' friendly defeat to Benfica on Saturday evening. That belief was confirmed today, with Wilshere heading back to Arsenal for further treatment ahead of the Premier League opener at Newcastle.

Cleverly replaced Carrick at half-time during United’s 3-2 victory over neighbours Man City in Sunday’s Community Shield at Wembley and produced a superb performance including a beautiful wall pass that facilitated Nani’s first – the Portuguese player also scored the winner – and his team’s second goal.

Cleverley and Carrick’s United team-mate, Ashley Young, another to impress in the Community Shield match is hoping his move to Old Trafford will keep him in the England team. The player moved from Aston Villa to United this summer. “Fingers crossed, it will boost my England chances even more. As long as I’m doing well for Manchester United then fingers-crossed I’ll be playing for England.

Young was delighted to win his first trophy as a United player, having set up the first of United’s three goals as they came back from 2-0 down. “It’s always a good way to start the season. We wanted to go out and put in a good performance.

“When you get Manchester City and Manchester United, it’s never friendly but we showed we’re the better side.”

Meanwhile Tottenham right back Kyle Walker admitted he was living his dream by being in the same England squad as players he had looked up to. “I'm delighted to be here with the likes of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. These are the guys I’ve been watching and it’s an honour to be around them.

“I think it's a massive opportunity. Hopefully I can get my start and go from there really. It’s not really my choice to name the team but I’d like to think I was in contention.” Walker backed Cleverley, who he played alongside for England Under-21s, to have an impact in the senior squad.

“Tom’s a great player. We saw (in the Community Shield) what he can do on the ball. He can deliver a ball, he’s very good at crossing and very good at passing.”

Meanwhile Frank Lampard has withdrawn from the England squad to face Holland tomorrow and has returned to Chelsea because of a throat infection, the English FA confirmed.
