Merrion Square not so leafy

Sir, – John Devlin (May 21st) is right about the terrible denuding of Merrion Square that has been going on for some months. I took the shortcut through the park each week with an increasingly heavy heart. Every week more mature trees were gone. Every week the lovely screening all around showed more empty spaces. Ironically, there is still a notice detailing the variety of wildlife in the park. I doubt that much of it has survived this relentless, senseless onslaught. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The planners of Merrion Square would, I imagine, have laid out the park in ornamental lawns with plants, floral areas and open spaces to complement Europe’s finest Georgian square. It would be a shame if fine buildings, and the wide streets of of the capital, were put in the shade by trees when there is an abundance of woodland in and around the city. – Yours, etc,
