For grammar tips, best not count on the National Lottery

The folk there have lots on their plate

Sir, – The current National Lottery advertising poster declares: “Lotto has changed. Less balls, more millionaires.” Less balls, you say? Last I heard, the rules of grammar dictate that, when there aren’t as many of several things, eg buns on the plate, then there are fewer of them.

When there is not so much of one thing, eg cake on the plate, then, certainly, there is less of it. But the folk at the National Lottery, or indeed the advertising agency they presumably engaged for their latest campaign, would probably say balls to that. – Yours, etc,
