Initial claims for regular stateunemployment benefits rose 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 417,000for the week ended September 28th from the previous week, the US Labor Department said today.

The rise in jobless claims was larger than anticipated, withWall Street economists having projected claims would rise by4,000.

This is the sixth consecutive week that claims have been abovethe key 400,000 level, representing the longest string of claimsabove 400,000 since March through May of this year.

The four-week moving average for initial jobless claims rose2,500 to 423,000, marking the highest four-week moving average sincethe week ended May 4th.
