Two women were killed in a head-on collision with a truck yesterday evening just outside the north Galway village of Dunmore. The accident occurred just before 5 p.m. yesterday about 100 metres from Dunmore on the Tuam road, when the car in which the women were travelling overtook another vehicle and collided with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

It is believed that the women, who are related and from Co Galway, were both killed instantly. Members of the fire brigade and ambulance personnel spent over two hours trying to cut the bodies free of the wreckage of the car, which was crushed on impact. The truck driver was uninjured but reported to be suffering from shock.
