Two Cork men were jailed by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for the armed robbery of £2,000 from the Ballyphehane, Cork, branch of the AIB on December 13th, 1994. Patrick Jones (23) of Elm Road, Togher and Richard Murphy (24) of Cherry Tree Road, Togher, were jailed for seven and six years respectively by Judge Michael Moriarty.
Insp T.J. Nolan said that Murphy jumped on to a counter and threatened staff and customers with what appeared to be a sawn off shotgun while Jones took £2,041 from tills.
The shotgun was recovered during a later robbery and ballistics tests showed it was incapable of being fired. A second weapon used in the raid turned out to be a toy.
