Two men charged with the murder of a retired policeman have been remanded in custody, writes Dan Keenan, Northern News Editor. They are Alan McCook (25), Galgorm Road in Ahoghill and Mervyn Williamson, (21), Brookfield Gardens, Ahoghill, Co Antrim.

They have been charged with murdering retired RUC officer William Kennedy (65) who was found dead in his bungalow in Brookfield Gardens, Aghoghill, by his daughter on Sunday morning. Both men deny the charge.

They were among three people arrested on Christmas Day in connection with Mr Kennedy's death. A third suspect was released. The two were remanded to appear in court again on January 24th. The police service has said it believes Mr Kennedy's membership of the RUC does not have any bearing on the case.
