The US Central Command (Centcom) said in a statement troops on Saturday detained Mr Sayf al-Din al-Mashhadani and Mr Sad Abd al-Majid al-Faysal, both former regional chairmen in Iraq's ruling Baath Party.

Centcom said Mr al-Mashhadani, number 46 on its list, had been regional chairman of the Muthanna governorate and Mr al-Faysal, number 55, regional chairman of the Salah al-Din governorate.
