Six people were killed in heavy rains which battered northern and central Portugal at the weekend, according to a final toll released today by the national civil protection service.

Today rescue workers found the bodies of four people previously listed as missing - one woman, her two daughters and a man in his 70s - in the mud which had buried their homes in the north of the country.

A man was killed yesterday when his car fell into a ravine after a landslip on a road in the northern Mesao Frio region.

Another man in his 70s was killed while out cycling in the central Seia region.

The storms disrupted road and rail traffic and caused the closure of eight of the country's ports, maritime authorities said.

Portuguese President, Mr Jorge Sampaio, and Prime Minister, Mr Antonio Guterres, visited the affected regions today, many of which were inundated after nearby rivers flooded their banks.
