LONDON – Royal Dutch Shell, Europe’s largest oil company, has confirmed that the source of what could be Nigeria’s worst offshore spill in more than a decade is a leak in a flexible export line to a tanker.
Clean-up operations continued in the area around the leak in the line between the tanker and production facility, Shell said in an update on its website.
The Anglo-Dutch company shut its 200,000 barrel-a-day Bonga offshore field after it leaked less than 40,000 barrels earlier this week. It deployed five ships to spray dispersants and brought experts in to tackle the spill.
The leak could be Nigeria’s worst since an Exxon Mobil spill in 1998 dumped an estimated 40,000 barrels of oil into the sea. – (Bloomberg)
