The deputy leader of the SDLP has said the party was very close to an agreement on policing.

Mr Seamus Mallon told the BBC's Breakfast with Frostthat progress had been made at Hillsborough and there were just a few issues still to be resolved.

"It could well have been done on Thursday. There were some outstanding issues and I believe there is a recognition now, right across the board that the British government in terms of the legislation setting up the Patten recommendations made something of a mess of it," he said.

"I am confident that come June, which is the date specified, that we will be able to get it right."
