Teachers today welcomed new resources on tackling dyslexia as a positive move towards aiding thousands of pupils in their struggle to learn.

John Carr, general secretary of the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO), said the new DVD/CD-rom set, called "Understanding Dyslexia", would help pupils, parents and teachers.

"There is important information in the pack for parents and schools, it will also help older children as well," he said.

Minister for Education Mary Hanafin unveiled the new resource, which has been sent to the 4,000 schools across Ireland.

She said: "Encouraging and supporting pupils with dyslexia from the earliest possible time will help them develop skills and overcome literacy difficulties."

Ms Hanafin said the resources had been developed by the Education Department and the corresponding department in Northern Ireland.

"This new material will help and support parents and teachers to understand and respond to the educational needs of children with dyslexia," she said.

The INTO revealed around one in every 10 schoolchildren have fairly serious literacy difficulties, and that one in five would suffer some problems.
