A robber who invited armed detectives surrounding him to shoot him has been jailed for six years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Desmond Murphy pointed what proved to be a replica gun at gardai from a first floor window at Stanley Clerical and Lay Outfitters in Marlborough Street on October 1st, 1994. Garda Michael Cryan said he, invited the gardai to shoot him but was arrested shortly afterwards.

Judge Michael Moriarty noted that most of Murphy's crimes were committed when his drug habit had escalated. Murphy (23), originally from Macroom Avenue, Coolock, and with an address at Avondale House, Dublin, pleaded guilty to 12 charges of robbery and attempted robbery. A nolle prosequi was entered on six further charges.
