A prisoner alleged to have been the ringleader of a riot at Mountjoy Prison in 1997 yesterday lost his High Court claim for a relaxation of his conditions of detention at Portlaoise Prison. It was claimed he was being held under a "vengeful regime".

Mr Justice Butler rejected the claim that Warren Dumbrell (27), Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore, Dublin, was being detained unlawfully under a "vengeful regime" and said it was not open to the court to interfere with it.
