Prelate offered to resign

THE Archbishop of Dublin, Dr McQuaid, offered to resign in September 1970 because of his advanced age (he was 75). Pope Pius VI declined his offer.

The archbishop made a private visit to Rome at the time, and was met at the airport by the Irish Ambassador, Mr Leo McCauley. Mr McCauley drove the archbishop to the Irish College and drove him back to the airport on his departure.
