OTTAWA - The Canadian Prime Minister, Mr Jean Chretien, came under relentless attack on Monday from his four main opponents during the sole English-language televised debate of the federal election campaign.

As the undisputed front-runner in national polls and as the incumbent, he was the main target for the leaders of the other four main parties contesting the June 2nd election, whether separatist or federalist, right-wing or socialist.
