Over ten million pounds in cash and property was seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) last year, according to its annual report for 2000.
Publishing its fifth annual report today, CAB reported the efficacy ofbureau’s property ’freezing’ measures and tax collectionpower under the Revenue Acts.
It showed £8.4 million was seized under interim orders on various properties, while interlocutory orders on property amounted to £7 million. CAB also demanded £37 million in tax and interest from people suspected of involvement in criminal activity.
The Minister for Justice, Mr John O’Donoghue, said the bureau’s work was of "vital" importance in the fight against criminal activity.
He wished CAB continued success inits "unceasing battle to prevent those involved in the drugs trade and other forms of crime from enjoying the proceeds gained through the misery of others".
