A civil servant at the Department of Defence was discriminated against when she applied for promotion to assistant principal officer, an equality officer has decided.

The officer recommended that Ms Mary O'Callaghan be promoted and that she be paid £3,000 in respect of distress, damage to confidence and injury of feelings. Ms O'Callaghan's case was taken by her union, the PSEU, and related to vacancies at the level of assistant principal officer in June, 1993.
