The jury in the trial of the Leeds United footballers has been sent home for the weekend after failing to reach a verdict on the remaining charges.

The jury earlier asked the judge about a witness statement.

Jurors wanted to know when a statement from a witness to the attack on 20-year-old Mr Sarfraz Najeib in Mill Hill, Leeds, was made and whether it was before press coverage identifying Mr Woodgate and Mr Bowyer as suspects.

Footballers Mr Jonathan Woodgate (21) of Middlesbrough, and Mr Lee Bowyer (24) of Leeds, along with Mr Woodgate's friends Mr Paul Clifford and Mr Neale Caveney, both 21 and of Middlesbrough, deny grievous bodily harm with intent and affray.

The judge, Mr Justice Poole, told the jury that the witness statement was made on the day of the attack and that there had been no coverage until the arrest of the two players six days later.

Last night, after more than 14 hours of discussions at Hull Crown Court, the seven men and four women acquitted Mr Woodgate, Mr Clifford, Mr Caveney and Leeds defender Mr Michael Duberry (25) of accusations they tried to cover-up an attack on Mr Najeib.
