New Billy Wright murder inquiry ruled out

The British government tonight ruled out a fresh inquiry into the murder of jailed LVF leader Billy Wright.

The British government tonight ruled out a fresh inquiry into the murder of jailed LVF leader Billy Wright.

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Dr John Reid, who met Wright's father David, said the authorities would be prepared to consider fresh evidence.

But after three separate probes he insisted there would be no new inquiry.

Wright, leader of the Loyalist Volunteer Force, was shot dead inside the Maze Prison in December 1997 as he was waiting to be transported to the visitors' centre.

His father David claimed the killers belonging to the INLA were given assistance and accused the Government of a cover-up.

But Dr Reid pointed out that the police prosecution, the coroner's inquest and the Narey inquiry have all been carried out.

"Hence, it remains the Government's view that no new inquiry is required," he said.

The Secretary of State added that he would be happy to consider afresh any new information emerging from the meeting.

Dr Reid will respond directly to Mr Wright when this information has been studied.
