The nephew of the Dalai Lama has been killed during a 500km “Walk for Tibet” along a Florida highway, police said today.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 45-year-old Jigme Norbu was struck by a sport utility vehicle at about 7.30pm yesterday, local time, on State Road A1A along the state’s east coast.

According to ambassadorsforworldpeace.org, Mr Norbu was walking from St Augustine south to West Palm Beach to raise awareness of the Tibetan struggle for independence from China.

He had done the walks several other times including one in 2009 from Indiana to New York which marked the 50th anniversary of a failed Tibetan rebellion against Chinese rule that resulted in the exile of his uncle.
