BUENOS AIRES - More than 1,000 people, most of them truck drivers carrying perishable goods, have been trapped by record snows high in the Andes for almost a week, officials said yesterday.
Off and on snow squalls and high winds have sent three meter deep drifts across mountain highways which plows have been unable to clear for long enough for anyone to get through the crossing between Punta de Vacas, in Argentina's Mendoza province, and Chile.
