Death and disability from strokes could be cut if stroke units were set up in the 38 general hospitals in the Republic, according to a report to be published today by the Irish Heart Foundation, writes Padraig O'Morain. Over 8,500 people suffer strokes every year, and there are more than 30,000 survivors of strokes in the State, many with significant disability, according to the IHF report.
