A Belfast man, who shot his girlfriend with a gun he claimed he owned to protect her from a stalker, was jailed yesterday for three years on condition he undergo two years' probation and attend an anger and drink management course.

Belfast Crown Court heard police were alerted by staff at the Mater Hospital on November 15th last when a woman was admitted with a gunshot wound to her arm. She claimed she had been sitting outside her home when a man approached and shot her. But during the interview her 29-year-old boyfriend, Patrick McKenna, admitted shooting her by accident.
