Man critical after Dublin shooting

Gardaí are appealing for information this morning following the shooting of a 20-year-old man in Dublin yesterday evening.

The man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was shot in a gangland-style attack while walking along a street near his home.

He was approached by a vehicle – possibly a white van – on Moorfield Avenue, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, just after 7pm.

He was then shot twice in the neck. It is unclear how many assailants were involved, but there is thought to have been more than one.

The man does not live on Moorfield Avenue but he is believed to be a local. Gardaí do not believe he has ever been involved in serious crime.

The man was taken by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

There was speculation that it may have been a case of mistaken identity – but gardaí are anxious to point out that the investigation is at a very early stage. They are however treating the attack as attempted murder.

Once the alarm was raised, gardaí rushed to the scene of the shooting which is a housing estate. It was sealed off and preserved pending a full technical and forensic examination, which will take place today.

A burnt out vehicle was located off nearby Monastery Road and the scene there was also preserved while gardaí carried out a technical examination to ascertain whether there was a link between the burnt-out vehicle and the shooting.
