A man is to appear in court this morning after being charged with the assault of a woman at her home in Mulhuddart, west Dublin.

The injured woman, a Polish national aged 32, sustained serious head injuries when attacked by a man armed with a hammer. She remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

The woman was discovered at her home on Monday morning and has since been transferred to Beaumont Hospital in the north of the city.

A man later presented himself to Blanchardstown gardaí and he was charged last night.

The woman and the 39-year-old suspect are known to each other. Her three-year-old son was in the house on Ladyswell Road when the attack occurred.

Gardaí received an emergency call on Monday at about 10am alerting them to the attack.

The man is the only suspect in the case.
