A daily Mass-goer and upstanding member of a rural community who systematically abused four boys over a 20-year period in Co. Galway was described by his victims yesterday as "an evil beast" who would continue to abuse other children if given the chance.

Matthew "Mattie" Keady (68), of Poul, Spiddal, Co. Galway, faced over 100 charges and had pleaded guilty last December to 12 sample charges of buggery and indecent assault involving the four boys. He then applied to change his plea to that of not guilty, but Judge Carroll Moran rejected this in May.

Judge Carroll Moran said the litany of events outlined to the court were appalling. He had a substantial prison sentence in mind but needed time to consider the matter fully. He remanded Keady in custody until November 6th for sentencing.
