A 20-year-old man was critically ill in hospital last night after he was shot in a gangland-style attack while walking along a street near his home.

The victim was approached by assailants in a vehicle, possibly a white van, on Moorfield Avenue, Clondalkin, Dublin, just after 7pm and shot twice in the neck. It was unclear last night how many attackers were involved but there is thought to have been more than one.

Gardaí do not believe he has been involved in serious crime and there was speculation that it may have been a case of mistaken identity.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the station on 01-6667700, or the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
