The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was called to the scene of a fire in Limerick amid fears that nearby members of the public could be exposed to dangerous asbestos particles.

overnight  tyre depot in Limerick has been destroyed in a fire.

The fire at Midwest Tyres on the city's Dock Road broke out at midnight and was brought under control this morning. The cause is not yet known.

The plant is believed to have contained some asbestos, and residents in the area, as well as motorists, have been advised to keep their windows closed.

The Dock Road was closed for a time but later reopened by gardaí.

A Limerick Fire Service spokeswoman said the EPA was brought in to assess the air quality.
