Turkey yesterday captured the Kurdish guerrilla leader, Mr Abdullah Ocalan, and brought him home to stand trial, spiriting him out of Kenya.
Kurdish protests across Europe, originally called to protest at Greece's refusal to grant Mr Ocalan refuge, intensified. The demonstrations were directed largely against Greece, which secretly sheltered Mr Ocalan in its Nairobi mission before he fell into Turkey's hands.
Washington denied any "direct involvement" in Mr Ocalan's arrest.
The Greek Prime Minister, Mr Costas Simitis, came under attack from critics for allowing the rebel leader to be delivered to Turkey.
Greece recalled its ambassador from Kenya over the incident.
The Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Bulent Ecevit, his voice shaking with emotion, announced: "The head of the separatist organisation has been in Turkey since three o'clock this morning. He will account for his actions in front of the Turkish justice system."
