Ivory Coast's armed forces announced tonight that they had recaptured the rebel stronghold of Bouake.

"This liberation followed an action by all the armed forces combined," forces spokesman Colonel Jules Yao Yao announced on national television.

Witnesses in Bouake said the situation remained confused and gunfire continued around the city, Ivory Coast's second biggest after the economic capital Abidjan, 360 km to the south.
