Israeli moves to withdraw its forces from some cities in the West Bank have not satisfied the demands of the international community according to a senior British diplomat.
The British Ambassador to the United Nations, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, was speaking after the Israelis withdrew their tanks and troops from Qalqiliya and Tulkarem - but at the same time moved into another West Bank town, Dura.
Sir Jeremy said the international community wanted Israel to pull out of all the West Bank towns it had occupied over the past week.
The limited withdrawal, he said, was a gesture towards United States Secretary of State Colin Powell, who is due in Israel later this week to follow up President George Bush's call on the Israelis to pull out "without delay".
Sir Jeremy told the BBC Radio 4 Todayprogramme: "It is not enough in the view of the Security Council, and I don't think it's enough in the view of the United Kingdom.
"I think that they have begun to withdraw from some places because Secretary Powell is on his way and wants to talk about this.
"They have kept their troops in a number of other cities where there has been some very severe fighting, Nablus and Jenin particularly, and the Security Council has asked for them to withdraw from all this territory."
