Israeli soldiers killed an eight-year-old boy in the West Bank town of Hebron today while laying siege to a building where the army believed militants were hiding.
Troops fired tank shells at the eight-storey building and fought an intensive gun battle with armed Palestinians, witnesses said.
The boy - who was standing watching the fighting with his family - was injured by shell shrapnel and died in hospital, officials said.
After evacuating the building and sending two Palestinians inside to check if it was empty, troops prepared to blow up the apartment complex as part of an Israeli policy to demolish militant's homes in the hopes of deterring Palestinians from attacking Israelis.
