Jerusalem - Israel has for the first time named an Arab judge to serve on the Supreme Court, the Justice Ministry said yesterday.

A spokeswoman said Mr Abd al-Rahman Zuabi (65), a judge in the District Court of Nazareth in northern Israel, was chosen because of his "experience and seniority". After six months a judicial committee will decide whether to make the position permanent.
