Man (80s) dies in three-vehicle crash on M9

One man has died and two other people have been injured in a crash on the M9 motorway involving three vehicles, with one man in a serious condition in hospital.

The crash occurred near Castledermot, Co Kildare, between southbound junction four and five on the M9 motorway shortly after 7am on Wednesday.

The driver of one vehicle, a man in his early 80s, was taken to St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny, in a serious condition, where he later died.

A man (30s) driving one of the other vehicles was also seriously injured, and was airlifted to hospital from the scene.

The driver of the third vehicle, a woman in her 30s, was taken to St Luke’s Hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Garda forensic collision investigators were on site at the scene of the crash, seeking to determine what happened.

The stretch of road between junction four and five was closed earlier on Wednesday to allow for a technical examination, and has since reopened.

A Garda spokeswoman said investigators were appealing for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone travelling on the section of the M9 on Wednesday morning with camera or dashcam footage, to contact gardaí.
