Bird flu found in German poultry

BERLIN- German officials yesterday said they had discovered the H5N1 bird flu virus in domestic poultry for the first time this year but said the danger was small.

A domestic goose in the town of Wickersdorf in the state of Thuringia was found to be infected with the virus, the Friedrich-Loeffler Institute said.

Institute spokeswoman Elke Reinking said the danger of infection spreading in the surrounding area was small because the infected bird lived on a small hobby farm in a remote area.

Landmine kills five children

MOGADISHU- A landmine hidden in a box exploded in a livestock market in Somalia's capital yesterday, killing five children who were playing football and wounding at least 10 others, witnesses said.

"We were playing football when suddenly a boy pulled out a string. The string was tied to a box that had a landmine concealed in it," blast survivor Mohamed Deq (11) said.

Challenge to Bush spying dismissed

WASHINGTON- A US appeals court in Cincinnati yesterday ordered the dismissal of a lawsuit challenging President Bush's domestic spying programme adopted after the September 11th attacks.

The appeals court panel ruled the groups and individuals who brought the lawsuit, led by the American Civil Liberties Union, did not have the legal right to bring the challenge.

£1.5bn estimate for flooding damage

LONDON- Last week's floods could cost insurers £1.5 billion (€2.2 billion), loss adjusters said yesterday, as the government defended its response to the deluge.

Prime minister Gordon Brown pledged help for flood victims after torrential rain hit Humberside, Yorkshire and the Midlands.

Estranged husband unmasked by wife

MADRID- A Spanish woman who pulled the mask off a man as he tried to strangle her was astonished to discover the attacker was her estranged husband, Spanish media reported yesterday. The woman had thought the masked man, who burst into the bakery where she worked in the city of Valencia, was a robber.
