Warning over holiday assaults

A pattern of increased sexual assaults and rapes during holiday periods has been recorded by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre which has warned people to be more vigilant over Easter, writes Genevieve Carbery.

Crisis centre volunteers accompanied 57 people to the sexual assault treatment unit at the Rotunda over Christmas 2008, a 20 per cent increase on 2007.

The organisation has offered some advice for keeping safe during Easter especially when going out for the night.

People are reminded to be vigilant when drinking by not accepting a drink from someone they have just met, holding their drink at all times or asking someone they trust to mind it.

The agency warned that eight in ten victims are raped by someone they know.

The organisation also placed the onus on potential perpetrators by reminding them that the legal age of consent is 17, it is a crime to have sex without consent and a person cannot consent to sex if they are asleep or unconscious.

The National 24-hour helpline for the victims of rape and sexual abuse is 1800 77 88 88.

Mouthwash recall issued

A possible contamination of infectious bacteria has led to the recall of 17 different types of mouthwash, writes Ronan McGreevy.

The recall occurred after the Manchester-based company Robert McBride Ltd which manufactures the mouthwashes noticed higher levels of the bacteria aerobic mesophile.

The bacteria is harmless to healthy people but can cause infections in people with a susceptibility to chest or lung infections. The products in question are Dentimint, Dentyl, Superdrug and Tesco mouthwash products.
