Rome - About 40 illegal immigrants were abandoned by smugglers on a disused oil platform in the Adriatic yesterday and rescued by coastguards, police said.
The immigrants were discovered on a disused platform some 15 miles off the coast of Ancona in the central Adriatic. They were apparently abandoned there by unscrupulous immigrant smugglers who took them to the platform by boat.
