London - A headmistress with 35 years' teaching experience was last night facing the prospect of prison after being found guilty of hitting a 10-year-old pupil.

Marjorie Evans (56), who has been suspended from her job for the past nine months, was told by a Stipendiary Magistrate, Mr Vivian Manning-Davies, at Abergavenny magistrates court in South Wales that she could face a custodial sentence after he found her guilty of common assault. He said: "It is a serious case and I have to consider custody. All options will be considered. I am not at this stage ruling out anything."
