Vienna - Austria's leading far-right politician, Mr Jorg Haider, has created more controversy by calling for the "elimination" of all illegal immigrants living in Austria.

Speaking to an audience of 2,000 in Vienna's town hall at the start of campaigning for local elections next spring, Mr Haider argued for a total halt to immigration - a call he evidently hoped would help to put his Freedom Party back in the limelight after it was trounced in a provincial election on October 15th.

"There are far too many illegal immigrants, crimes and drug dealers - none of them have a place here in Austria. This has to be our priority, to eliminate them uncompromisingly," he said.
