The anti-abortion group, Youth Defence, has challenged the Fianna Fail leader, Mr Bertie Ahern, to give a commitment on the holding of an abortion referendum.

The group presented a pro-referendum petition with 11,390 signatures yesterday, which it says were collected in Mr Ahern's Dublin Central constituency.

The figure matches the Fianna Fail leader's first preference vote in the last election.
