Newcastle and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has been given the all-clear to play in his 95th consecutive Premiership game at Everton following a scan on his injured knee.

The 27-year-old returned to Tyneside yesterday after suffering knee and neck injuries during the Republic's 1-1 draw with Russia in Dublin on Saturday.

It was initially thought his neck problem could be serious, but his knee eventually gave the greater concern, although a scan has now confirmed there is no lasting damage.

"Shay has had his scan and there's nothing abnormal, just a bit of bruising," said a club spokesman. "He is expected to play at the weekend."

The news will be welcomed by manager Bobby Robson who was facing a goalkeeping crisis as his deputy, Steve Harper, is out for at least three weeks with a hamstring tear.
