Gardai in Carlow are investigating an incident in which a mother and son were tied up and burgled by raiders in their home on the edge of the town.

The 76-year-old woman and the 43-year-old man were confronted by the five men, wearing stockings on their heads, in the farmhouse at Brown's Hill at around 8.40pm last night.

The raiders, who were unarmed, remained in the house for a short time before making off with €150 and a small safe, according to gardai.

Neither occupant was hurt in the raid.

The men are believed to have used a dark blue saloon car and gardai believe they 'put-on' different accents so as to hamper any investigation.
