The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors deplored "in the strongest possible terms the murderous attack on gardai in Adare". It asked the public to co operate in tracking down those responsible.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU), which represents post office staff, strongly condemned the attack. The union's general secretary, Mr David Begg, said that postal workers had a "special appreciation" of the role of gardai, as they worked with them on a daily basis.

The Bishop of Limerick, Dr Donal Murray, expressed his "profound shock and horror" at the attack and asked for prayers for the garda who was killed.

The Security Institute of Ireland expressed "shock and outrage" at the attack. It called on members of the public to come forward with any relevant information, no matter how trivial.
