MEXICO CITY - Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes has lashed out at what he calls US xenophobia and fascism against Mexican migrants, as reflected in new immigration and welfare laws.

Accepting an award as Commander of the National Order of Merit at the French Embassy in Mexico City on Tuesday, he said: "They know they need migrant Mexican labour, without which their harvests, services and many aspects of life would go to ruin."
