A second test on a cow in western Denmark suspected of contracting foot-and-mouth disease proved negative, Denmark's State Veterinary Institute said.

Samples from the cow, which had shown symptoms of the disease, were tested initially by the institute at the weekend and found negative amid fears that Denmark could be hit by its first foot-and-mouth outbreak since the early 1980s.

In Britain almost 70 cases of the highly contagious disease have been registered across the country, prompting extensive slaughter of cows, sheep and pigs and a host of quarantine measures.

Although no cases have yet been confirmed in continental Europe, France, Germany and Belgium have also conducted tests on suspected animals. Earlier French agriculture minister Mr Jean Glavany said tests carried on sheep imported from Britain and slaughtered within the last two days were positive.
