European Central Bank Governing Council Member Mr Guy Quaden said today there was little reason to lower interest rates in the euro zone and even less reason to raise them.

The ECB held interest rates steady at record lows of 2.0 per cent on September 7th, and indicated they would stay there for some time.

In a newspaper interview, Mr Quaden said the outlook for inflation was still favourable but there were potential problems in the medium term.

"The high monetary growth is potentially a risk for inflation," he said.

"It is at the moment no problem. But if the economic recovery takes hold, we should concentrate more strongly on money supply in our analyses," added Mr Quaden.

Mr Quaden is a voting member of the ECB's policy-setting council and governor of the central bank of Belgium.
