Washington - The former president of Mexico, Mr Carlos Salinas De Gortari, who lives in exile in Dublin, has hit out at "enemies" who are accusing his brother Raul of murder and massive corruption, writes Joe Carroll. In the current issue of Newsweek Mr Salinas writes that the accusations have "caused enormous pain and damage to me personally, to my family and many others".
Insisting that his brother is innocent of the murder charge for which he is being tried in Mexico, Mr Salinas says that he has not been given a proper opportunity to talk to him about the corruption and drug-trafficking charges. He says that the reports of his brother's alleged wealth came to him as "a complete surprise".
Mr Salinas describes the charges of widespread corruption under his presidency and earlier ones as "outrageous, absurd and an affront to all Mexicans".
