Mobile telecommunications operator Eircell has signed up UK technology company Digital Rum to develop its next generation e-commerce shopping portal.

The service will be based on Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and is planned for launch later this summer.

The 'Wireless Shopping Assistant' will allow mobile telephone users to search, compare prices among merchants and then purchase online.

Items Eircell plans to offer will include books, CDs and electrical items from both high street and online retailers.

The moves comes at a time that Eircell is investing £2million (euro2.5m) per week up-grading its network.
