Two people found dead in Dublin’s Grand Canal at the weekend died from drowning, postmortem examinations have confirmed.

The bodies of Wendy Atkinson (30), from Tallaght, and Robert Sneddon (29), from Whitehall, were discovered in water beneath a bridge on the Suir Road in Inchicore on Saturday.

It is thought that one of them fell into the canal – possibly because of the icy conditions - and that the other drowned during a rescue attempt.

The bodies were discovered a few hundred metres from the Suir Road Luas stop, near a well known drinking spot. They were removed to the City Morgue in Marino where the post-mortem examinations were carried out yesterday.

Gardaí are not treating their deaths as suspicious and would like to speak to anyone who was in the area between Thursday and Saturday last.

The case is being investigated by gardaí from Kilmainham who can be contacted on (01) 666 9700.
